Graduation and Farewell

End of an Era

On June 24th, Valerie and Pam attended the final Arthur S. Somers School graduation. We only wish that more family members could have been there to experience a very moving ceremony. It was a bittersweet event, but there is some good news: the school will retain the Somers name, and will be part of a campus that will specialize in art and philosophy. We’ll be getting more information about that.

The Arthur S. Somers School, 70 years:
Then
and Now

The class of 2009 was an amazing class that achieved high test scores and high honors and won many awards, and was also accomplished in music, drama and dance. School Principal Mendis P. Brown has done a fantastic job of bringing the school up to par scholastically. Although this could not prevent the closing of Somers, the students have greatly benefitted from the school’s standards of excellence.

Mellissa Rogers was the last grad to receive the annual Somers Family gift, in this case a lovely charm bracelet watch with a special charm engraved with her name and the name of the Arthur S. Somers Family.

Listen to Valerie’s Talk to the Class of 2009
She received more laughs than anyone, and about as much applause as the Reverend Al Sharpton, a Somers grad and surprise guest for the last Somers Graduation!

Postscript: Somers Family Fund

Andrew Somers Sr. has taken over the job of running the fund and is looking into setting up a corporation to facilitate charitable donations. The fund has done extremely well over the years, thanks to the good management of Edward Somers Sr. who has been looking after it since its inception. Since the school is closing now, we are looking for new ways to use the fund. Suggestions and/or contributions are always welcome. Please send them to Unk Andy.

Somers Grad Chosen

We’re very pleased to announce that Dion Hickman is this year’s recipient of the Arthur S. Somers Family Award. Each year a graduate of I.S. 252 is chosen to receive the award, based on effort as well as achievement. In the words of Assistant Vice President Verlinda Jones:

Dion Hickman gets good grades, is well organized and well liked by the other children. He also has a flair for the dramatic, and acted in the school play this year. He continued to do well at school even while going through a difficult time when his sister, who had graduated from Somers a few years ago, contracted leukemia. The two are very close, so it was hard on him. We’re happy to report that she is doing well now.

The Brooklyn Intermediate School 252, was named after Arthur S. Somers, who was deeply interested in education, and served as President of the Brooklyn Board of Education. You can learn more about him by clicking on Arthur S. Somers I over on the right, under Pictures.

Donations to the Somers Family Fund are always appreciated. Contact news@somersfamily.net for information on where to send a donation.

Somers Graduation in June

We’ve received some sad news — the Arthur S. Somers School will be closing within the next couple of years. More details when we have them.

As usual, the Arthur S. Somers Family fund will be giving a gift to a child who has demonstrated achievement through effort.  Please think about making a contribution to the fund this year.  Valerie and Pam hope to attend the graduation in June. Anyone in the area is also welcome to attend. We don’t have the exact date and location yet, but it will be in Brooklyn, late June. We hope to take Barbara Schwartz out to lunch this year. We just learned that Barbara Schwartz, who is the bookkeeper at the school, is also a graduate of Somers — Class of 1958!
