Hi, my name is barbara, granddaughter of the helen lawrence that you refer to in your article. Some of my sisters and I have decided to pick up where grandma left off. Can I tell me if you ever got the photos you were looking for, and if the family history was ever published?

my mother said it was nick named "The millionairs' St. " .WE DEFINITELY HAD OUR SHARE OF THEM !!!! the sad thing is that little by little everyone moved away. we were the second owners. we stayed there until the 3 oldest children married and moved away. then we went to1338. . i knew very few young people on my street.one time when i was older i was on the subway when a young man started to talk to me. i swore i had never seen him before in my life. it seems that he had lived all his life across the street from me. i claimed severe nearsightedness. my best friends lived on CARROL St. just around the corner. their names were Regina and Catherine McNally. their father was a playwrite.

Thank you, Caitlin!

I'm so happy to hear your memories. Especially you swearing that the place was haunted. I often thought so myself. Do you recall if you had an experience there? My Aunt, who is sensitive, said she had several experiences in one of the bedrooms down the hall. Not in the one you were in, which was actually my mother's bedroom, which was across from the room that she called "the conservatory". When we first arrived we found an attic FULL of bats! There are always bats flying around Lake Garfield at night. When we moved in we heard a story that there had been a bad girl living there, She was apparently an heiress who set fire to her home, and the house burned down and both her parents died. She was then sent to live at Rock Ridge with a governness, and one day she pulled a ladder out from under the governess, who was I believe killed. I can't recall how we heard that story, or if it was really true. But my mother drew enough good spirits around the house that I'm sure they kept the evil ones at bay!

Hi Caitlin,

Imaginary house, LOL! I recall now that my parents were renting it out during winters when they were in Florida, and that must have been your father's company. I think they were using it as a base for going skiing in the area. We knew a lot of different people were using the house, but they always took good care of it. How nice that you have such fond memories of Rock Ridge! It was actually called Rock Ridge as far back as 1924, when my great-grandfather bought it for my grandparents, but my grandmother thought it was too far from the water for supervising small children, so they sold it and she moved over to his property. Then years later, my father bought it back! Since then it has changed hands twice. The house that my grandmother took is now a Bed and Breakfast called Lakeview Terrace, so if you have a real yen for staying in Monterey, you could try there. It is only open in the summer.

I was there 2 times. It was probably about 17 yrs ago...I was only about 11 I believe and we went there because my father said his company had rented it or something along those lines and whoever wanted to could go there for the weekend....something like that...I was talking to close family friends recently and they came with us both times we went. All of us kids are older now and married and moved away and we still all remember and talk about rock ridge. We were scouring the internet trying to find it because we thought we would be able to spend a weekend up there again...I tried calling the Monterey MA municipal office and they thought I was crazy and talking about some imaginary house. Lol. My question is this? Obviously we are talking about the same place- do u rent the house out at all?? I hope to hear from you again! Thank you so much!

Caitlin,

I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you saying that you vacationed at Rock Ridge on Lake Garfield? If so, this is the same house. It was owned by our family at the time the pictures were taken, but it was called Rock Ridge before that. When would you have been there?

This is a bizzarre question, however, I will ask it anyways..as I was hunting on the internet for information regarding a childhood vacation spot of mine called Rock Ridge, I came across images from your website...they said something like "mother's day at rock ridge"...or something along those lines. Anyways, I am just wondering if you have any information regarding this house on Lake Garfield..or if those pictures are totally unrelated...any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

My father went to Poly Prep Country Day School and often talked about how much he loved it. My Aunt Valerie went to School of the Holy Child in Suffern, NY. It's possible that some of the others went to Brooklyn Prep.
